The UK Defence minister dismissed rumors of potential repercussions from the US for failing to meet expectations during the Iran conflict. Luke Pollard, Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry, stated that the UK Government does not acknowledge claims of US President Donald Trump threatening audit-based penalties for not assisting in the Iran conflict.
Alleged plans by Trump to sanction and reward NATO members are under discussion, with a possibility of withdrawing American troops from less supportive nations, as reported by The Times. Trump has been critical of NATO’s actions during the Iran conflict, accusing the alliance of inactivity in supporting the US.
Responding to the reports, Pollard emphasized that the UK does not consider the Iran conflict as its own but has actively supported allies against Iranian attacks. He highlighted NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte’s commendation of UK efforts in uniting allies to ensure the Strait of Hormuz remains open for energy and ship traffic.
Addressing US Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s questioning of NATO’s necessity, Pollard reiterated the importance of US participation in NATO. He emphasized the need to reinforce NATO’s unity and commitment to collective defense, in response to challenges posed by Trump.
Pollard announced a new multimillion-pound missile contract for drone interceptors to counter Iranian threats, noting the deployment of Royal Navy assets to assist in reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Keir Starmer expressed frustration over the impact of Trump and Vladimir Putin’s actions on UK families and businesses through fluctuating energy costs.
The Prime Minister criticized Trump’s aggressive language towards Iran and emphasized the importance of upholding British values. Starmer called for increased resilience in the face of global volatility, stating that the Iran conflict represents a critical moment with long-lasting implications for all.
