Lawrence Okolie has suggested that his bicep injury treatment may be the reason for his positive drug test result.
The former cruiserweight and bridgerweight champion was set to face Tony Yoka in Paris on Saturday for his ongoing heavyweight journey. His promoter, Queensberry, disclosed that the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA) notified them of Okolie’s adverse finding from a pre-fight anti-doping test. They promised to provide further updates on the situation.
Taking to social media, Okolie explained, “After sustaining a bicep injury last year, I suffered an elbow injury on the same arm during this training camp.” He expressed confidence in cooperating with authorities to clear his name amid any investigation.
Okolie and Yoka both participated in the 2016 Rio Olympics in different weight categories, with Yoka securing a gold medal. Okolie transitioned to the heavyweight division after his cruiserweight success and was on a winning streak before the recent turn of events.
In anticipation of his bout with Yoka, Okolie shared his excitement about competing at heavyweight, citing feeling at his physical peak. Reflecting on his opponent, he viewed the match as a significant opportunity, likening it to his long-awaited Olympic gold medal moment.
The upcoming fight against Yoka holds personal significance for Okolie, who sees it as a chance to prove himself at the highest levels of professional boxing.
