A major airline’s CEO has issued a cautionary message about upcoming flight cancellations following the company’s recent decision to scrap some UK routes. Norse Atlantic Airways’ CEO, Eivind Roald, has been compelled to cancel flights from London Gatwick Airport to Los Angeles due to a significant spike in jet fuel prices exceeding 100% in just a few days.
Numerous airlines globally have been forced to cancel flights due to Iran’s control over the critical Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for global supplies. Additionally, amid ongoing orders from Donald Trump to the US Navy to blockade Iranian ports, the situation remains tense.
In an interview with BBC Newsnight, Mr. Roald indicated a likelihood of further flight cancellations by airlines. Despite Norse Atlantic’s commitment to maintaining flights from London Gatwick, Athens, and Rome throughout the summer, Roald suggested that more cancellations could be anticipated, particularly in short-haul European flights.
Following the cancellation of journeys between London and Los Angeles, Norse Atlantic attributed the decision to the unforeseen global fuel crisis. The company expressed regret over disrupting travel plans but emphasized the necessity to ensure a sustainable future and reliable service for passengers during the summer season.
As concerns mount over jet fuel shortages and potential flight disruptions, the UK Government has issued a statement in response to warnings from the European Union. EU energy commissioner Dan Jorgensen also highlighted the likelihood of holiday disruptions due to flight cancellations or skyrocketing ticket prices.
The Department for Transport has provided guidance to passengers booked with various carriers, including Jet2, Ryanair, Wizz, easyJet, and British Airways. The official advice reassured passengers that there is currently no need to alter travel plans, as UK airlines pre-purchase jet fuel and maintain adequate stocks to mitigate risks and minimize passenger inconvenience.
Passengers were reminded of their legal rights in case of flight cancellations, including entitlement to a full refund or re-routing. The government, in collaboration with the aviation industry, continues to monitor risks closely to ensure minimal disruption to travelers.
