In the last twenty years, frequent travelers passing through airports have become accustomed to the standard security measure that restricts certain items, particularly liquids exceeding a specific limit. Despite its widespread application, the rationale behind the introduction and perpetuation of the liquid rule remains unclear to many.
As more individuals opt to minimize holiday expenses by forgoing checked baggage in favor of hand luggage, they inadvertently risk breaching the rule as toiletries can easily surpass the liquid threshold. At numerous airports, passengers are restricted from carrying liquids in containers larger than 100ml through security checkpoints.
Although some believe the liquid rule was a response to the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center in 2001, it was not implemented until five years later in 2006 following the prevention of a potential plot by the Metropolitan Police. This delay was attributed to heightened security concerns post-9/11.
After the thwarted attacks, passengers were temporarily barred from bringing hand luggage onto flights, necessitating all items to be checked in for thorough screening. While this blanket prohibition lasted only a few days in August 2006, carry-on baggage gradually returned to normal operations, yet the 100ml liquid restriction persisted over the subsequent two decades.
The 100ml limitation was specifically introduced to thwart potential terrorists from smuggling liquid explosives onto aircraft, concealed within ordinary items. This capacity restriction was deliberately set to prevent the combination of liquid components to create a significant explosive threat while facilitating security personnel’s management, as reported by the Express.
The foiled plot involved terrorists planning to travel from the UK to the US and Canada with liquid explosive disguised as soft drinks. Subsequently, seven individuals were convicted of conspiracy charges.
Although plans are underway to update regulations with advancing technology, most airports continue to rigorously enforce the 100ml limit. However, impending changes are on the horizon.
Several UK airports have begun permitting passengers to carry up to two liters of liquids in hand luggage without the need for removal during security screening. Nonetheless, not all UK airports have implemented this adjustment.
While some major UK airports have already updated their rules, others are still in the process of integrating new scanning equipment. Notably, the 100ml rule has been rescinded at select airports like Heathrow, Edinburgh, Belfast, and Birmingham, allowing passengers to carry larger liquid quantities through security.
These changes are attributed to the adoption of new CT scanners capable of providing enhanced imaging, albeit experiencing delays in their widespread implementation. Some airports such as Luton and Manchester still adhere to the 100ml rule, although passengers can retain liquids in their cabin bags.
Most airports do not impose restrictions on the number of liquid bottles passengers can bring, regardless of the enforcement of the 100ml rule. However, it is advisable to verify the current regulations on the airport’s official website for accurate information.
