“US Citizen Defends Home Against Israeli Settlers”

The recent encirclement of Palestinian residences by militant Israeli settlers in Qusra village, located in the occupied West Bank, is not an isolated event. However, the U.S. citizenship of one Palestinian homeowner has brought more media attention to the situation compared to the frequent acts of aggression by extremist Jewish settlers aimed at displacing Palestinians from their land.

Loui Ridi, a businessman from Ohio, returned to Qusra on August 17 to safeguard his home, where his brother and nephew reside, from settlers who had surrounded it along with two neighboring homes. Ridi recounted in a video call with CBC news that his brother had contacted him, expressing the need for food but refusing to leave the house as it would risk losing it to the settlers.

Reflecting on previous incidents in a neighboring village, Ridi highlighted the escalating settler aggression in the region. Israeli settlements in the West Bank are deemed illegal under international law and have expanded notably under Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s administration, which is accused of endorsing settler violence.

Upon his return to Qusra, one of Ridi’s initial actions was to display an American flag on his building while seeking assistance from the U.S. Embassy. The village of Qusra, situated about 16 kilometers south of Nablus, is encircled by settlement blocs and outposts occupied by radical settlers, such as Migdalim and Shilo.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reported an average of about six incidents per day involving settler attacks causing casualties or property damage this year, the highest on record. The violence in Qusra prompted a condemnation from U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee, who labeled the perpetrators as “Israeli terrorists.”

Huckabee’s strong support for Israel’s settlement policy and Jewish historical claims to the land contrasts with the criticism from various quarters regarding the escalating settler violence and the complicity of the Israeli government. The situation in Qusra has led to concerns about the blurred lines between soldiers and settlers, with allegations of collaboration between the Israeli army and settlers.

The ongoing unrest in Qusra and similar incidents across Palestinian villages in the West Bank have raised questions about the IDF’s role and the settlers’ actions, fueling Palestinian perceptions that the IDF enables the expansion of Israeli settlements. The plight faced by Palestinians, including attacks on homes, underscores the challenges and tensions prevailing in the region.

The strategic targeting of Palestinian areas on the outskirts of settlements aims to restrict Palestinian movement and consolidate settlement blocs. The recent condemnation by several countries, including Canada, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom, against Israel’s decision to publish construction tenders for a new settlement near East Jerusalem underscores the international concern over the impact on a potential two-state solution and territorial integrity.
