Russian military launched a widespread drone assault on Ukraine overnight while the death toll from a weekend shooting spree in Kyiv climbed to seven. Ukraine retaliated by targeting the Black Sea port of Tuapse, triggering a significant fire at an oil facility in the Krasnodar region.
This marked Ukraine’s second strike on the Russian facility within a week, with the aim to disrupt Russian President Vladimir Putin’s financial resources primarily derived from energy sales. A gunman’s attack at a Kyiv mall on Saturday left six dead and 14 injured, including a child, with seven individuals still hospitalized.
The assailant, a 58-year-old Russian-born man residing in the Donetsk region, was killed by rapid response special forces. In response, Kremlin forces carried out attacks in multiple cities across Ukraine, causing property damage and civilian injuries as air raid sirens blared in various locations.
Ukrainian defenses, including air and missile units, electronic warfare teams, and mobile fire groups, were mobilized to counter the assault. Despite downing 113 Russian drones, wreckage from the attacks caused significant damage. Notably, Ukraine has frequently targeted key Russian export hubs, impacting the country’s oil exports and refineries.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky criticized the US decision to extend Russia’s oil sales window amid Western sanctions, emphasizing that such transactions fund the war in Ukraine. Sanctions against Russia have been in effect since Putin’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
Ukraine’s strategy to disrupt Russian energy sources is aimed at weakening Putin’s war efforts, although Kremlin forces continue to target civilian areas to undermine Ukrainian morale. Putin has been facing challenges in recruiting troops for the conflict, with over 1,000 Russian soldiers reportedly lost daily due to death or injury.
