Keir Starmer is set to embark on a trip to the Middle East this Wednesday to engage in discussions with leaders from Gulf countries regarding diplomatic initiatives aimed at backing a two-week ceasefire.
The Prime Minister expressed approval of the recent developments, where Donald Trump has decided to halt planned strikes on civilian infrastructure in Iran. This decision by the US President was made in conjunction with agreeing to a two-week ceasefire, contingent upon permitting shipping activities through the Strait of Hormuz.
Addressing the ceasefire agreement, the PM emphasized the importance of supporting and upholding the ceasefire alongside international partners to ensure its longevity and the eventual reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
Prior to the deadline set for Wednesday morning, President Trump postponed potential strikes on power plants and bridges in Iran. Following this, he acknowledged a 10-point plan put forth by Tehran as a feasible foundation for negotiation, prompted by mediation efforts led by Pakistan.
During his visit to the region, Mr. Starmer will affirm the UK government’s dedication to de-escalation and engage in dialogues regarding the permanent reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. The focus will be on practical steps to reinstate freedom of navigation in the vital shipping route, building on positive developments resulting from the ceasefire.
It is anticipated that the PM will meet with UK and local personnel during his visit to express gratitude for their courageous efforts in safeguarding national and allied interests in the region.
The Ministry of Defence confirmed that UK forces have successfully intercepted over 110 drone attacks in the area, with the RAF conducting more than 1600 hours of defensive operations.
Minister Sarah Jones highlighted the significance of the ceasefire announcement and emphasized the need for transforming it into a lasting agreement. She noted that the PM’s visit aims to assess the defensive measures in the region firsthand and contribute to ensuring the success of the ceasefire and the reopening of the vital waterway.
Mr. Starmer’s trip follows a recent assembly of over 40 nations, coordinated by the UK, to initiate plans for the reopening of the crucial shipping passage. Additionally, a separate military planning session was hosted by the UK to further these efforts.
Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper engaged in discussions with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio regarding initiatives to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The effective blockade imposed by Tehran on this strategic sea route, responsible for a significant portion of global oil transportation, has led to considerable fluctuations in oil prices worldwide.
In a statement, Ms. Cooper welcomed the ceasefire but stressed the urgency of ending hostilities in Lebanon promptly. She underscored the need for a swift resolution to the conflict to enhance security, protect citizens in the region, and mitigate the impact on the cost of living domestically.
The UK’s consistent stance on de-escalation and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz was reiterated, with a commitment to collaborating with relevant sectors to restore confidence in the route swiftly. Iran was urged to cease activities obstructing commercial shipping in the Strait immediately.
