Taking action to secure the future of the World Snooker Championship at The Crucible, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is set to provide funding as the venue’s contract nears expiration next year.
While Council officials are eager to continue hosting the championship at The Crucible, Barry Hearn, the president of Matchroom Sport, has hinted at exploring alternative venues.
The government has intervened by committing to financial support, with Starmer engaging in discussions about the tournament’s future during a recent visit to The Crucible with local authorities and partners.
A source from The Sheffield Star disclosed, “Negotiations are progressing rapidly, boosted by the Prime Minister’s involvement at The Crucible in Sheffield, emphasizing the significance of his support. Concrete actions are now awaited following the productive roundtable discussion, showcasing his keen interest and understanding of the implications for the city, sports, and arts sectors.”
“He exhibited a strong desire for the event to continue, persuading those present. It’s a matter of ‘when,’ not ‘if.’ Exciting developments lie ahead for the city,” the source added.
The Crucible has been the esteemed host of the Snooker World Championships since 1977, although uncertainties have emerged due to contractual concerns.
Expressing concerns, Hearn warned that if his demand for £1 million prize money is not met, Saudi Arabia could potentially become the new host for the tournament.
Hearn emphasized, “Sheffield’s efforts are crucial, but additional government backing is needed to elevate the event. The responsibility still lies on Sheffield to align with our expectations.”
“Despite being a major event in England, the prize money falls short of expectations. Mutual understanding is key to resolving these issues,” he stated.
The 2026 World Snooker Championship will commence on April 18, featuring Chinese star Zhao Xintong as the defending champion, who defeated Mark Williams in last year’s final.
