The suspected gunman who targeted Donald Trump issued peculiar apologies and justifications in a written statement.
The accused individual, Cole Allen, shared the document with family members approximately 10 minutes prior to the incident at the White House Correspondent’s Dinner. Spanning 1,052 words, the manifesto detailed the shooter’s defined “rules of engagement” for the Saturday shooting, asserting his responsibility to aim at members of the Trump administration.
Reportedly, Allen, a teacher, initiated the manifesto by expressing regret to those whose trust he had betrayed. He stated, “I apologize to my parents for misleading them about an interview, which was actually for ‘Most Wanted’.” Additionally, he apologized to coworkers and students for fabricating a personal emergency, acknowledging a potential need for medical attention at the time of writing.
Further in the manifesto, he extended apologies to fellow travelers, luggage handlers, hotel occupants he endangered, and those who had suffered prior to his intended actions. Allen expressed remorse towards victims of abuse and violence both before and potentially after the incident.
Following a rush through a security checkpoint and an altercation resulting in the injury of an agent at the Washington DC dinner, Allen was apprehended. Law enforcement reported that he was armed with firearms and knives during the encounter.
During the event, where approximately 2,500 individuals were present, President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were evacuated upon hearing gunshots outside. Identified as the suspect, Allen, aged 31 and hailing from Torrance, a suburb of Los Angeles, was reportedly targeting administration officials as outlined in his manifesto.
Trump refuted the manifesto’s claims in an interview with 60 Minutes, denying the allegations made against him. Notably, the President has encountered multiple assassination attempts, including a famous incident during his 2024 campaign where he was targeted by a gunman in Butler, Pennsylvania.
