Fernando Alonso is rumored to be considering a return to his former team, Alpine, amid ongoing struggles for his current team, Aston Martin. Although Alonso previously expressed his intention to end his Formula 1 career with Aston Martin, speculation is circulating in the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix paddock about a potential switch.
Alonso, who turns 45 in July, has had three previous stints with Alpine, achieving his greatest success by winning consecutive drivers’ championships in 2005 and 2006 when the team was known as Renault. Recent periods from 2008-2009 and 2021-2022 were less successful for him.
Rumors suggest that Alonso might reunite with team boss Flavio Briatore at Alpine, where their strong bond could pave the way for a final shot at success. However, this move would require Alonso to depart from his long-term agreement with Aston Martin, which secures him an ambassadorial role with the team post-retirement.
Despite Aston Martin’s promising potential, they are currently facing challenges. Expected to make strides towards the front of the grid this season, their performance has regressed, exacerbated by a rocky start to their engine partnership with Honda.
Alpine, on the other hand, has shown improvement this season after finishing last in the 2025 constructors’ championship. With Briatore back at the helm and powered by Mercedes engines, Alpine currently ranks fifth in the midfield for the 2026 season.
Alonso is in good spirits at the Barcelona circuit this weekend, a venue where he last won in 2013. He acknowledged that this race at Montmelo might be his final Formula 1 appearance at the track. He mentioned that he would decide on his future in the sport after the summer.
