Isack Hadjar lost his first Red Bull podium finish after Alpine successfully appealed the two five-second penalties given to Pierre Gasly during the Monaco Grand Prix. Gasly, along with other drivers, was penalized for speeding in the pit lane during the race.
Gasly insisted that he had activated the speed limiter on time and expressed disappointment at missing out on a podium finish. Alpine lodged a Right of Review with the FIA immediately after the race, leading to a hearing in Barcelona where new evidence was presented and deemed admissible.
Formula One Management provided evidence showing inaccuracies in the speed measurement loops used during the Grand Prix, leading to Gasly’s speed being overestimated. Gasly’s penalties were the only ones overturned as Alpine was the sole team to request a review.
The second part of the hearing confirmed Alpine’s victory, reinstating Gasly’s third-place finish. The stewards rescinded the penalties on Gasly and revised the final classification of the race.
Alpine’s team statement expressed gratitude for the decision and emphasized their focus on the upcoming Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix. The stewards explained that Gasly did not exceed the speed limit in the pit lane, leading to the overturning of his penalties.
Despite the faulty timing system affecting multiple drivers, only Gasly’s penalties were reversed. The stewards clarified that served penalties cannot be undone and no other team pursued a Right of Review within the allowed timeframe.
Gasly’s restored podium finish highlighted the importance of accuracy in race regulations, ensuring fair competition for all drivers.
