WhatsApp is addressing a major concern by introducing new features, prompting users to take action promptly. Currently, users rely on phone numbers to chat on the platform, which is not always convenient. However, Meta-owned WhatsApp is now rolling out a solution by introducing unique usernames, allowing users to communicate without sharing their phone numbers.
This update comes after a long wait and aims to enhance user privacy and convenience. Users can now use usernames instead of phone numbers when interacting with others, making it easier to connect with classmates, neighbors, event contacts, or group chat members without revealing personal phone numbers.
The change also brings added privacy to group conversations, enabling users to join community chats or social groups without immediately disclosing their phone numbers to strangers. WhatsApp encourages users to reserve their preferred usernames in advance of the full launch to secure their desired names before they are taken by others due to the platform’s vast user base.
To reserve a username, users simply need to update WhatsApp to the latest version and navigate to Settings > Account > Username. The feature will be gradually rolled out over the next few months, with WhatsApp notifying users when usernames become available in their region.
