Donald Trump has provided an unusual and perplexing update on the Iran situation, claiming that the country’s nuclear facilities have already been completely destroyed.
The US President made these declarations, which appeared to contradict his stated objective of preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. Trump criticized what he called “fake news” and reiterated that previous strikes on Iran had effectively eradicated their nuclear sites.
In a post on TruthSocial, Trump stated, “Operation Midnight Hammer resulted in the total obliteration of the Nuclear Dust sites in Iran. Thus, excavation will be a challenging and lengthy process. Fake News CNN, along with other biased Media Networks and Platforms, continue to undermine the commendable efforts of our skilled aviators – always seeking to diminish and disparage – LOSERS!!!”
While Trump seemed to be alluding to the challenges of acquiring materials necessary for building a nuclear bomb, his statements also undermined one of the stated goals of the conflict. Earlier, in March, Trump had claimed that Iran was only “two to four weeks” away from obtaining a nuclear weapon, using this as justification for the ongoing war in the Middle East.
Operation Midnight Hammer, part of the joint US-Israel Twelve-Day War in June of the previous year, targeted Iran’s nuclear sites. Trump and his administration hailed the operation as a success, asserting that it had “wiped out” Iran’s nuclear program.
However, analysts at the time expressed doubts that the attack had completely eradicated Iran’s nuclear capabilities, although many agreed that the regime had suffered a significant setback in its uranium enrichment production. The assertion that Iran’s nuclear sites had been “obliterated” contrasts with the inconsistent explanations provided by the Trump administration for the commencement of the war.
Various reasons have been cited for the ongoing conflict, including halting Iran’s missile capabilities, preventing them from developing nuclear weapons, regime change, and seizing the country’s oil resources. Despite a recent ceasefire between Iran and the US, no permanent resolution to the conflict has been achieved.
Trump has repeatedly claimed that the war would conclude within weeks, only for it to persist. Negotiations to end the conflict fell through when the US walked away after just one day of talks in Pakistan.
Pakistan is set to host another round of peace talks, but there is no indication of an imminent end to the war. The global economy has felt the impact of the conflict, with oil prices surging worldwide.
The crucial Strait of Hormuz, a significant oil shipping route, has faced threats of closure and blockades from both Iran and the US. Interestingly, Pakistan could potentially be drawn into the conflict against Iran due to a defense pact with Saudi Arabia, which has been targeted by Tehran’s allies.
