Claire’s, a popular fashion accessories retailer, has announced the closure of its 154 stores in the UK and Ireland, resulting in approximately 1,300 job losses, according to administrators. Kroll, the administrators overseeing the process, confirmed that all remaining Claire’s stores have stopped operations, and employees have been informed of their redundancy. However, concession outlets and the company’s European stores will continue to operate at this time.
Last September, Mayfair financiers Modella Capital acquired 156 Claire’s stores in the UK and Ireland after taking over WH Smith’s high street arm. While acknowledging that some store closures and job cuts were inevitable, Modella Capital stated that the acquisition aimed to potentially save over 1,000 jobs in the region.
Unfortunately, in January of this year, Claire’s UK arm went into administration, citing challenging retail conditions, including government policies, as significant factors impacting businesses like Claire’s. Concerns are also mounting for TJ Jones, the renamed WH Smith high street business, as reports suggest it is preparing for a restructuring that may lead to numerous store closures.
The closure of the 154 UK and Ireland stores does not affect Claire’s 356 concessions, including those within Asda stores, and its head office operations. Fashion expert Priya Raj highlighted a shift in consumer preferences away from Claire’s signature colorful and novelty jewelry towards more minimalist and curated styles influenced by social media trends.
Recent reports have indicated the closure of several Claire’s stores in different locations, such as Cheshire Oaks, Sutton Coldfield, Stockport, Watford, and Bangor.
