North Lincolnshire Council Introduces Relief for Terminally Ill Families

Working-age households with a terminally ill member will receive relief from council tax payments through a new initiative introduced by North Lincolnshire Council. Families in this situation will be exempt from council tax obligations for a year to alleviate financial burdens during such difficult times. The scheme, set to operate for two years initially, will provide details on eligibility and application procedures on the council’s official website.

Similar schemes are also in place in other councils like Barnet, Cheshire West, and Milton Keynes, following advocacy by the national charity Marie Curie. Meanwhile, a majority of English councils are planning to raise council tax bills by 5%, with certain councils granted permission for higher increases.

The average annual council tax bill for a band D property currently stands at £2,392. Cllr Rob Waltham, the leader of North Lincolnshire Council, emphasized the importance of supporting families facing the loss of a loved one by relieving them of financial concerns. Cllr Richard Hannigan highlighted the significant impact of the initiative on families during challenging times, acknowledging the emotional, practical, and financial changes that come with terminal illnesses.

Cllr Tim Mitchell emphasized the council’s commitment to providing targeted and compassionate support to residents in exceptional circumstances. If individuals suspect they are in a higher council tax band than appropriate, they are encouraged to challenge it, potentially leading to refunds and reduced future bills. Conversely, being in a lower council tax band than warranted may result in higher bills and affect neighbors.

Various circumstances may qualify individuals for council tax discounts, such as living alone or being classified as “severely mentally impaired.” Those on benefits or low incomes can explore Council Tax Support or Reduction schemes, which could offer discounts of up to 100% based on eligibility criteria that vary by location.
