A long-serving store manager at Morrisons, with 29 years of experience, revealed that he was terminated from his position after confronting a recurrent shoplifter who turned hostile.
Sean Egan, aged 46, expressed his struggle to make ends meet following his dismissal from Morrisons, despite his lengthy tenure starting from the age of 17. He had been employed at the Aldridge branch near Walsall until an incident unfolded in December, altering his circumstances.
Sean recounted his effort to thwart a shoplifter attempting to abscond from the supermarket with stolen merchandise. Asserting his responsibility as the store manager, he stated, “I placed myself in harm’s way to safeguard my colleagues and patrons.”
Nevertheless, despite his actions, a disciplinary procedure led to Sean’s dismissal due to his deviation from the company’s policy of deterrence without detainment. Residing in Wolverhampton, Sean lamented, “Per the store manager policy, my role was to escort him off the premises; however, during the process, he became belligerent and spat at me.”
He disclosed that a physical altercation ensued as he attempted to remove the individual from the store following the spitting incident, as reported to the BBC. Recalling the event, he explained, “In the heat of the moment, I instinctively reacted by blocking his arm to prevent him from reaching his bag, leading to a confrontation.”
At that critical juncture, the store manager felt compelled to intervene to prevent potential harm to himself and others within the store. Despite contacting the police during the episode, he found himself under investigation by Morrisons, ultimately leading to his dismissal.
Sean emphasized the adverse impact of the incident on himself and his family, expressing, “We are barely getting by.” He highlighted that his last paycheck was received in January and lamented the personal toll the situation had taken.
In critiquing the supermarket chain, he decried the lack of support for staff handling incidents involving shoplifters and aggressive individuals. He remarked, “I have dedicated a significant portion of my life to this company…yet, in that moment, it felt as though all my contributions were disregarded.”
Morrisons declined to comment on individual cases when approached by The Mirror, stating, “We are actively implementing measures to address the risks posed by shoplifting and violence in our stores.
