Lewis Hamilton has advised England football fans to refrain from chanting ‘It’s Coming Home’ until the Three Lions have actually secured the World Cup trophy. The renowned racer shared his message to supporters of Thomas Tuchel’s team on the tournament’s opening day in North America, also disclosing his support for another team this summer.
Born in Stevenage, Hamilton has proudly represented Great Britain throughout his successful F1 career. However, having been granted honorary Brazilian citizenship in 2022, he announced his allegiance to Carlo Ancelotti’s Selecao just before the Monaco Grand Prix weekend.
Expressing his admiration for Brazil, Hamilton stated, “For me, it’s on par with England. Brazil has always been my preferred team. Watching Brazil play was a childhood joy for me in England. The colors, culture, and exceptionally skilled players always captivated me; they exuded coolness.”
He added, “I respect their origins. Many players come from streets where they play barefoot, and there’s a unique charm to Brazilian culture.”
Hamilton’s remarks stirred significant reactions back home. Yet, speaking before the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix media day, just prior to the World Cup kickoff with Mexico versus South Africa, Hamilton reaffirmed his unwavering support for the South American powerhouse.
When asked about his World Cup forecasts, Hamilton replied, “I don’t have a prediction. I’m not closely following it. I’ll check in occasionally and keep a keen eye on England. I just hope they avoid premature ‘It’s Coming Home’ chants, as is customary. Let’s sing it when we’ve won, not before. I’m excited to see the yellow-clad team in Brazil. I adore watching Brazil play.”
Hamilton has secured second place in his last two Grands Prix and seems to have found his stride since transitioning to Ferrari. A first victory for Scuderia appears imminent, although he acknowledges it would require Mercedes to struggle or his team to narrow the performance gap with the Silver Arrows significantly.
The latter option is Hamilton’s preferred path. He stated, “I hope we can be competitive in such a scenario. We aim to win based on performance, not by default. We strive to earn victories through pure performance, and that’s our current focus.”
