Billionaire entrepreneur Mike Ashley’s retail conglomerate has acquired two discount shopping hubs as part of its expanding property portfolio.
Frasers Group disclosed the purchase of York Designer Outlet and East Midlands Designer Outlet, frequented by nearly 7.8 million shoppers annually. Although the transaction value remains undisclosed, estimates suggest it could be in the region of £400 million.
While renowned for its ownership of various retailers like Sports Direct and Flannels, Frasers Group has been steadily procuring shopping centers nationwide. Michael Murray, the group’s Chief Executive and Mr. Ashley’s son-in-law, emphasized their goal to further enhance their market share in the UK outlet sector.
This recent acquisition follows Frasers’ procurement of Swindon Designer Outlet last December and Braehead Shopping Centre in Scotland for approximately £220 million in November. The company’s property investments include several shopping centers across the UK, reflecting its commitment to revitalizing retail hubs.
Frasers Group’s annual report underscores the significance of property investments in driving retail business growth and revitalizing high streets. The York Designer Outlet, spanning 250,000 square feet, houses a wide array of retailers and draws 4.3 million visitors yearly. Likewise, the East Midlands Designer Outlet, covering 170,000 square feet and hosting over 65 designer brands, attracts approximately 3.5 million visitors annually.
Mr. Murray highlighted the strategic relevance of these acquisitions in fostering partnerships with global brands and driving mutual growth by supporting outlet strategies.
Mike Ashley, the bold entrepreneur who retains the majority stake in Frasers Group, initiated his retail journey over three decades ago in Maidenhead, Berkshire. Since then, the company has evolved into a retail powerhouse with a market value nearing £3 billion, boasting a vast network of stores, a substantial workforce, and a global presence.
