“Buzz Bingo Sees Resurgence in UK, Optimism for Future”

Bingo enthusiasts have reasons to celebrate as the popular game sees a resurgence in the UK. Leading operator Buzz Bingo reported a 2.5% increase in numbers last year, with a notable 5% growth in the second half, marking the first rise in both admissions and revenues since 2007.

Dominic Mansour, the head of Buzz Bingo, expressed optimism, stating, “Bingo is enjoying a real resurgence across the UK.” Originally introduced from the US in the 1950s, bingo gained significant popularity in the 1960s, with many cinemas transformed into vibrant bingo halls.

Despite facing challenges such as declining attendance numbers in the 1980s and competition from the National Lottery since 1994, operators have been implementing innovative strategies to revive interest in bingo. Recent reports have indicated a resurgence in the game, with a surge in younger players noted, although the total number of bingo halls has decreased from 335 to around 247 post-Covid.

The Bingo Association disclosed that the collective profit of all bingo clubs in the country amounts to approximately £35 million annually. However, challenges like the impact of the 2024 Autumn Budget, escalated employers’ national insurance, and minimum wage increments have affected profits.

Buzz Bingo, formerly operating 137 sites, has seen a decline in venues post-pandemic, with some closures like the Shrewsbury club. Mansour attributed the recent success to technological advancements and club renovations, leading to a 20% rise in admissions and a 50% increase in new customers. The firm highlighted that members win an average of £2 million per week in clubs, with an additional £400,000 weekly in online winnings.

Mansour expressed confidence in the future, expecting even stronger growth in the coming years. He emphasized the significance of a stable regulatory environment for sustained positive momentum. Research has also shown that bingo halls can have a positive impact on players, with a poll revealing that a majority of players felt less lonely after engaging in bingo activities.
