Tragic Loss: Mother Identifies Daughter’s Body by Necklace

Jamila Afelom recounted the poignant moment she identified her daughter’s lifeless body solely by a necklace she had given her before her ill-fated attempt to reach Ceuta from Morocco by swimming. Fatin Ben Homar Azizi’s body was discovered by Afelom at a hospital a day and a half after the tragic incident. Afelom, speaking from Tétouan, Morocco, vividly shared the emotional turmoil she experienced on that fateful day in late July.

Describing her daughter as bold, determined, and somewhat tomboyish, Afelom reminisced about Fatin’s passion for soccer. Fatin, a 26-year-old aspiring footballer, had a deep connection with her coach, Adel El Kaab, who considered her like a younger sister. El Kaab highlighted how football served as a sanctuary for many girls facing challenging economic circumstances.

Despite El Kaab’s efforts to caution his players about the risks associated with irregular migration routes, several girls, including Fatin, were lured by the hope of a better future in Europe. Tragically, Fatin lost her life during the tumultuous journey to Ceuta, leaving her family and teammates devastated.

Afelom, a single mother, toiled at a cemetery alongside Fatin, struggling to make ends meet in a harsh economic environment. Fatin’s longing to escape poverty and provide a better life for her family led her to embark on the perilous journey to Europe, despite her mother’s attempts to dissuade her.

The Moroccan human rights organization revealed the grim reality that many individuals, like Fatin, perished while attempting to cross into Ceuta. The organization called for authorities to halt further burials and ensure the dignified identification and repatriation of the deceased migrants.

Fatin was laid to rest at the same cemetery where she and her mother worked together, symbolizing the tragic end to her aspirations for a brighter future. The heart-wrenching tale of Fatin’s untimely demise underscores the harsh realities faced by many young Moroccans seeking refuge from economic hardship through risky migration routes.

Amidst the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Ceuta, Afelom’s anguish is compounded by the uncertainty surrounding her surviving children, especially her 14-year-old daughter stranded in a foreign land. The story of Fatin Ben Homar Azizi serves as a poignant reminder of the profound sacrifices and tragedies that often accompany the pursuit of a better life.
