A judge has handed down a life sentence to Nathan Chasing Horse, known for his role in the movie “Dances With Wolves,” following his conviction on 13 charges related to the sexual assault of Indigenous women. The sentencing came after victims and their families spoke out about the lasting impact of Chasing Horse’s actions, which included exploiting his role as a spiritual leader to prey on individuals.
Corena Leone-LaCroix, who was assaulted by Chasing Horse at the age of 14, expressed the irreparable loss she has experienced, stating, “The life that little girl could have lived has been taken from me forever.” While the identities of sexual assault victims are typically kept confidential, Leone-LaCroix chose to come forward publicly.
Chasing Horse, donning his Clark County Detention Center uniform, listened as the victims addressed the court. Despite maintaining his innocence, he will be eligible for parole after serving 37 years. The judge emphasized her astonishment at Chasing Horse’s persistent denial of the charges despite the evidence presented during the trial.
