World Password Day, observed on Thursday, May 7, serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining strong account protection. Unfortunately, many individuals still engage in risky practices, such as using easily guessable passwords that can be compromised within seconds. Moreover, the habit of reusing the same password across multiple accounts further exposes individuals to cyber threats.
A recent study by Hybrid Cloud Services revealed that a significant number of people resort to using a single password for all their accounts, a risky behavior that compromises their online security. Additionally, around 36% of individuals use between one to three passwords across various online platforms, which also poses a security risk.
Surprisingly, only 19% of users employ a different password for each account, which is considered a safer approach to online security. Despite repeated warnings from cybersecurity experts, common and weak passwords like “admin,” “123456,” and “password” remain prevalent among UK users, according to NordPass.
To enhance account security, experts recommend enabling two-factor authentication whenever feasible, as it adds an extra layer of protection requiring a secondary device or verification step for access. Creating longer, more intricate passwords and utilizing a password manager are also advised to manage credentials securely and deter password reuse.
Matt Cooke, EMEA Cybersecurity Strategist at Proofpoint, emphasized the significance of avoiding easily guessable passwords and practicing good password hygiene. He advised updating personal passwords biannually and business passwords quarterly to enhance security practices.
Here are three simple strategies to bolster password security:
1. Opt for passphrases over simple passwords: Formulate a lengthy passphrase by combining unrelated words, such as “purple-umbrella-dragon-forest,” which are harder to crack yet easier to remember.
2. Generate unique passwords for each account: Utilize tools or password managers to create strong, random passwords for individual accounts to ensure secure logins.
3. Leverage a password manager: Securely store credentials, autofill login details, and manage robust, unique passwords for all accounts efficiently using password managers.
By adopting these practices, individuals can significantly enhance their online security and safeguard their sensitive information from cyber threats.
