“UK Phasing Out Copper Landlines for Digital Voice Service”

In a significant transition, the traditional copper landlines hanging above UK streets are being phased out, with the nationwide shift to “Digital Voice” services scheduled for January 2027. This move signifies the end of the outdated copper-wire phone network.

Following the implementation of this deadline, households will transition to making calls via their broadband connections. This shift represents a major transformation in UK communications, aiming to expedite the move away from aging infrastructure. BT’s Openreach network is driving this change through its ongoing “Stop Sell” initiative.

Under the Stop Sell program, major providers like BT, Sky, Plusnet, and TalkTalk are prohibited from offering new copper-based broadband and phone services in affected areas. This initiative has already been introduced in various parts of the UK, with Openreach confirming an expansion that will impact approximately 1.69 million premises across 238 exchange locations.

Customers upgrading or switching services post-implementation will need to switch to full fibre broadband and digital phone services instead of relying on the legacy copper network. Openreach has clarified that the Stop Sell policy is activated when a majority (75%) of premises connected to a particular exchange have access to ultrafast Full Fibre.

By early June, the Stop Sell regulations will be in effect across 1,432 exchanges nationwide, affecting around 14.2 million properties. James Lilley, Openreach’s Managed Customer Migrations Director, emphasized the importance of the Stop Sell program in facilitating the UK’s transition to a modern full fibre future.

Digital Voice, BT’s advanced home phone service, leverages broadband technology to offer modern features like Multi Call, three-way calling, and call diversion to any number, including mobile phones. This service upgrade is bundled with broadband at no additional cost for most households, with improved call quality and the need for a compatible Digital Home phone for optimal performance.
