The R&A is considering adjusting their plans for The Open Championship’s finale to prevent a potential clash with the World Cup final. Scottie Scheffler is set to defend the Claret Jug at Royal Birkdale on Sunday, July 19, which coincides with the football tournament’s climax at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
The overlap between these two major events poses a challenge for Open organizers, especially if a playoff is needed at Birkdale, where a record-breaking 300,000 spectators are anticipated. Chief executive Mark Darbon acknowledged the issue and expressed the intention to minimize any scheduling conflicts, although unforeseen circumstances like playoffs could impact the outcome.
In other news, the R&A has confirmed that the Open will make a return to Royal Lytham & St Annes in 2028 after a 16-year absence. Highlighting the improvements made to the course in recent years, Darbon emphasized the need for careful management at this challenging venue to enhance the overall championship experience.
