“Cruise Assault: Abusive Husband Sentenced”

An abusive husband has been sentenced for assaulting his wife during a cruise to celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary. Alan Dop, on a luxury Mediterranean cruise last August, kicked his wife, causing bruising and swelling, as well as grabbing, shaking, and throwing her across the room, resulting in a back injury. The incident, witnessed by their seven-year-old son, occurred within their 10-year marriage.

Dop’s problematic drinking behavior had escalated in the past two years, leading his wife to ask him to leave, which he refused. Described as extremely abusive when intoxicated, Dop’s actions culminated in physical assaults at their home in Gwynedd post-cruise, where he assaulted his wife, leaving visible injuries including bruising and redness. The victim managed to escape and called the police, who found Dop heavily intoxicated.

During sentencing, the judge noted Dop’s remorse but emphasized that his actions were inexcusable. Dop, whose drinking issues were linked to his past experiences in the RNLI, received a suspended 12-month sentence, narrowly avoiding jail. The judge highlighted Dop’s unhealthy relationship with alcohol and the need for him to take responsibility for his actions, issuing a seven-year restraining order to protect the victim and arranging contact with their child through a third party.
