Tragic Fatality Halts North West 200 Qualifying

A tragic incident occurred during the North West 200 qualifying session in Northern Ireland, resulting in the death of a rider.

Following the crash, racing activities were immediately halted on Thursday, and the organizers later confirmed that the rider, who remains unidentified, had passed away.

An official spokesperson stated that the fatality took place at Station Corner on the NW200 course during the Superbike qualifying session of the 2026 Briggs Equipment North West 200.

Emergency services responded promptly to the incident, but unfortunately, the rider could not survive the injuries sustained, leading to a red flag on the session.

Although the family permitted the event to proceed, they requested that the rider’s identity not be disclosed at this time.

The Coleraine and District Motor Club, the event organizers, expressed their heartfelt condolences to the family and the rider’s team.

Road Racing Ireland also conveyed their deepest sympathies to the rider’s family, friends, team, and all those impacted by the tragic events of the day.

The North West 200, held on a 8.97-mile closed public road circuit known as the ‘Triangle’ between Portrush, Portstewart, and Coleraine, is Northern Ireland’s premier outdoor sports gathering, drawing approximately 100,000 spectators.

This fatality marks the first death at the event since Malachi Mitchell-Thomas lost his life during a Supertwins race in 2016.

Organizers have adjusted the schedule for Thursday evening, with roads now open and set to close at 4.45pm. Four qualifying sessions will replace the originally planned races starting from 5.45pm.
