Abdul Razaq Khan, a previous translator and guide for Canadian journalists during the Afghan conflict, was contacted late at night by a journalist he had assisted in Kandahar. Khan, now residing in Canada after leaving his job in Kabul due to the Taliban’s advance on the city in 2021, still struggles to comprehend the events that led to the rapid downfall of the government backed by Western nations.
Having fled on foot to Pakistan as the Taliban seized control of Kabul, Khan’s association with Canadian media outlets had put him in danger. The same peril was faced by numerous Afghans who worked with journalists, military forces, and aid agencies from the West.
The Taliban’s resurgence has not only displaced many Afghans but also ushered in a return to strict fundamentalist rule, marked by the marginalization of women from public life, suppression of dissent, and imposition of rigid moral standards.
Women, who were a focal point of Western initiatives during the conflict, have borne the brunt of the Taliban’s rule, facing increased violence and a lack of justice. Organizations like The Zan Times have reported a disturbing trend where perpetrators of violence against women often go unpunished, with many cases falsely labeled as suicides.
While efforts have been made to evacuate and support high-risk Afghan women, challenges persist. A recent report by Local Staff International and AfghanEvac highlighted the difficulties faced by allied nations in evacuating and resettling vulnerable Afghans, including interpreters and their families.
Canada, for instance, resettled over 60,000 vulnerable Afghans post-Taliban takeover, but there are still many at risk under Taliban rule. Calls have been made to expand resettlement programs to fulfill the commitments made to those who supported Western troops during the conflict.
