Simone Abrahamsohn, a resident of Toronto, recently underwent a significant life change by taking on the role of her older brother’s primary caregiver after the passing of their mother. Managing the cohabitation of two neurodivergent siblings in their middle age has presented both joys and challenges for Simone. Her brother, Stuart, who is autistic and a left-brain stem stroke survivor, requires specialized care involving assistance with daily tasks, emotional support, and accommodation for his triggers, such as sensitivity to loud noises.
Simone reflects on the past when she used to feel embarrassed by Stuart’s neurodivergent behavior, which often led to misunderstandings and judgment from others. Despite their differences, she acknowledges her own struggles with ADHD and the importance of masking her own challenges to maintain a harmonious living environment. Through their shared experiences and mutual understanding, Simone has learned to appreciate the unique bond she shares with her brother.
As they navigate their new living arrangement, Simone strives to create a supportive and inclusive space for both herself and Stuart, embracing the opportunity to advocate for his needs and provide him with agency in decision-making. While sacrifices have been made, including giving up personal pursuits to prioritize caring for Stuart, Simone remains committed to fostering a positive environment for their shared journey as non-neurotypical siblings. This second chance at building a stronger sibling bond motivates Simone to embrace the present and prioritize their relationship above all else.
