A shooting incident occurred at a shopping center in Louisiana, resulting in two critical injuries and multiple other casualties.
The Baton Rouge Police Department reported that ten individuals sustained injuries during the incident at the Mall of Louisiana. Law enforcement swiftly responded, securing the area and imposing a lockdown. Some of the wounded are currently undergoing surgeries, as per police officials.
The shooting is believed to have taken place close to the shopping center’s food court around 1:25 pm local time. Emergency personnel set up a triage area outside a JCPenney store. Access to the mall has been restricted to emergency responders only.
Chief TJ Morse stated that there is currently no danger to the public and that the shooting stemmed from an escalated argument between two groups.
Morse mentioned, “Regrettably, there were innocent bystanders in the vicinity who may have been affected as well.”
Sid Edwards, the Mayor-president of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, confirmed his presence at the mall where a command post was established.
In a statement, Edwards stated, “There has been a shooting incident with multiple victims at the mall. All civilians have been safely evacuated. Please keep the victims and their families in your thoughts and prayers.”
He also joined law enforcement at the scene, declaring, “To those responsible for this act, we will apprehend you.”
Our Lady of the Lake Hospital, located nearby, advised against visiting the facility at this time, urging individuals to avoid the area.
The hospital’s statement requested all family members to report to the main entrance of Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical. It also informed that the medical center is on secured access and asked visitors to refrain from coming unless necessary, while the emergency rooms remain open. Updates will be provided as the situation progresses.
Local Governor Jeff Landry acknowledged the active shooter situation at the Mall of Louisiana and advised people to steer clear of the area.
Landry expressed, “Sharon and I are praying for those impacted and appreciate the swift response by law enforcement.”
Attorney General Liz Murrill stated, “I have been in contact with District Attorney Hillar Moore, who is actively monitoring the situation involving gunfire at the Food Court in the Mall of Louisiana.”
She added, “Multiple law enforcement agencies are responding; please avoid the vicinity. Further details will be forthcoming.”
