“Saskatchewan Business Owner Charged for Exploiting Foreign Worker”

A business proprietor is being prosecuted for alleged mistreatment of a foreign worker at the Swift Current Husky Travel Centre in southwest Saskatchewan, approximately 225 kilometers west of Regina. The Provincial Ministry of Immigration and Career Training disclosed that the purported offenses occurred from September 2023 to August 2025, spanning nearly two years.

The employer and a numbered company are facing eight charges under the foreign worker protection laws of the province. They stand accused of imposing fees for work and exploiting the trust or fear of a foreign worker, as well as taking advantage of their lack of knowledge concerning the situation.

The allegations fall under the Foreign Worker Recruitment and Immigration Services Act, with additional charges laid under the Immigration Services Act, which replaced the former law in 2024. These laws are designed to safeguard immigrants and foreign workers from specific predicaments they may encounter.

The Immigration Services Act was enacted by the province to enhance the safeguarding of foreign workers, enabling fines of up to $750,000 for an individual employer and $1,250,000 for a corporation upon conviction. Among the prohibited actions for employers under this legislation are charging foreign workers for job opportunities, confiscating passports or work permits, withholding immigration application details, or making deportation threats.

The initial court appearance for this case is set to take place on Wednesday in Swift Current.
