“Russian Health Authorities Dismiss Second Illness Claims”

Russian health authorities dismissed claims of a second person falling ill after the death of a laboratory worker in a plague research facility in Siberia. The regulator refuted false information circulating on social media, confirming that no additional cases of illness were detected among contacts of the deceased woman. The 28-year-old lab employee, Daria Shipilova, passed away from pneumonia of unknown origin. The health watchdog in Russia stated that no dangerous pathogens were found in individuals who had contact with Shipilova, emphasizing that she had been vaccinated against the infections she worked with.

Global concern escalated following Shipilova’s mysterious death, prompting Russian authorities to implement precautionary measures. The World Health Organization initially assessed the public risk as low but expressed the need for more information from Russian authorities to conduct a comprehensive risk evaluation. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus offered assistance to Russia and sought verification of reports regarding a second employee with unexplained pneumonia.

Health Canada and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are closely monitoring the situation, indicating minimal risk to their respective countries. Health officials in the U.S. are prepared to monitor and screen travelers from Siberia. Flights between Russia and the United States have been suspended since the onset of the Ukraine conflict in 2022, affecting approximately 200 travelers annually from the Siberian region.
