“Reviving Tradition: Family Dinners Unite Cultures in Delta”

Growing up in Delta, B.C., one of my cherished childhood memories involves family dinners on a small beige mat, the sun setting and casting a warm glow. Our meals often featured Pakistani dishes like biryani and butter chicken. This tradition, passed down from my father’s upbringing in Lahore, symbolized more than just sharing a meal – it embodied gratitude and family unity.

As time went by, our busy schedules made it challenging to gather for these dinners. It had been over a decade since we last sat on that mat. However, during a Thanksgiving dinner at 23, I reintroduced this tradition to my friends from diverse cultural backgrounds. Setting up the worn-out beige mat in the living room, we shared a circle, enjoying Thanksgiving turkey.

The evening turned into a heartwarming experience as my father joined us, explaining the tradition. This moment bridged our heritage with Canadian customs. Inspired by this, my family revived the tradition, emphasizing the importance of togetherness amidst hectic lives. Now, we prioritize dinner time, whether on the mat or around the dining table, fostering family bonds that transcend generations.
