“Pilot’s Parole: Family Fears Release of Wife’s Killer”

The victim’s family of pilot Robert Brown, who was convicted of killing his wife, is preparing for his upcoming parole hearing. Brown, a former British Airways captain, brutally murdered his estranged wife Joanna Simpson in 2010. Despite pleas from Joanna’s mother, Diana Parkes, the parole hearing will be conducted privately.

Brown is set to face questioning from parole board professionals on April 23 and 24. Diana and advocate Hetti Barkworth-Nanton expressed their anticipation of this hearing, as it follows the referral of Brown’s release to the parole board by the then-Justice Secretary. Joanna’s family described her as a loving individual who was tragically taken away from them in a heinous manner.

The tragic incident occurred when Brown fatally assaulted Joanna at their home in Windsor, Berks, in the presence of their children. This act of domestic violence occurred shortly before their divorce was finalized, leading to Brown’s conviction for manslaughter and a 26-year prison sentence.

Despite being eligible for release last year, Brown’s early release was blocked by the Justice Secretary. Following a legal challenge against this decision, the High Court upheld the Secretary’s concerns about Brown posing a significant risk to public safety.

During court proceedings, it was revealed that Brown showed no remorse and exhibited behavior indicating a potential for reoffending. The Ministry of Justice highlighted his lack of engagement with probation services and failure to complete necessary programs addressing his criminal behavior.

Joanna’s decision to seek legal advice regarding her relationship with Brown due to accusations of infidelity ultimately led to their separation. Despite efforts to protect her assets through a prenuptial agreement, Joanna tragically lost her life at the hands of Brown.

After reporting a domestic incident to the police, Brown was arrested and later guided authorities to the location where he had buried Joanna’s body.

Joanna’s mother expressed ongoing grief over the loss of her daughter and fears the potential release of Brown. She hopes that the Parole Board recognizes the danger Brown poses not only to Joanna’s loved ones but also to the general public. The family advocates for Brown to remain incarcerated for the safety of all concerned.
