“Northern Ontario Battles 85 Active Wildfires”

Northern Ontario is currently facing a significant challenge with 85 active wildfires, as reported by Ontario’s Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services (AFFES) on Saturday night. Out of these, seven fires are still not under control, while six are being contained, nine are under control, and the rest are under observation.

Efforts to manage these fires have been aided by cooler temperatures and expected precipitation, contributing to a decrease in fire intensity for some of the major blazes in the region. The forest fire hazard level is generally low in northwestern Ontario, with pockets of moderate risk in specific areas like Kenora, Marten Falls First Nation, and Thunder Bay’s fire management district.

One of the most notable firefighting operations is the Rinker Complex, which comprises Thunder Bay 36, Dryden 34, and Dryden 35 fires. These fires, collectively covering over 377,000 hectares, remain uncontrolled. Another significant area of concern is the Atikokan Cluster, including Fort Frances 13, 14, and 15 fires, with sizes ranging from 25,000 to 51,000 hectares.

Approximately 829 individuals are still displaced due to the wildfires in Ontario, while around 2,000 evacuees have been able to return to their homes. Evacuation alerts are in place for Fort Frances 39 and Minnesota’s “Thumb Fire,” urging residents to prepare for potential evacuations.

The fire situation has also impacted transportation, with several highway closures due to wildfire activity in the region. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have issued safety guidelines, urging people to avoid affected areas, follow evacuation orders, and monitor official updates closely.

In addition to the ongoing firefighting efforts, the ministry is implementing various measures to combat the wildfires effectively. This includes investing in new aircraft, increasing fire personnel positions, and providing essential supplies to affected communities. The ministry’s comprehensive approach aims to enhance wildfire response capabilities and support those impacted by the fires.
