“Late-Kick Off World Cup Matches Extend Pub Hours”

Football enthusiasts can now enjoy late-kick off World Cup matches in pubs until 2am, thanks to extended opening hours granted by the Government. This decision follows the additional time given for fans to watch England and Scotland’s games with late kick-offs during the tournament in the US, Mexico, and Canada.

The new extension allows bars to open longer for three crucial matches, potentially adding up to 13 games to the national pub licensing hours extension. Pubs in England and Wales can now remain open an extra two hours until 1am for the round of 32 and last 16 games scheduled from 5pm to 9pm. For later kick-offs from 9pm onwards, including games up to 10pm, last orders will be extended to 2am. This move builds upon existing extended pub licensing hours for matches starting between 8pm and 10pm.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood emphasized the importance of keeping fans in the pub, stating that the goal is to allow pubs and bars to serve customers well past the final whistle. The Home Secretary’s authority to extend licensing hours for events of significant national or international importance was previously exercised during the Women’s Euro 2025 tournament and Men’s Euro 2024 final.

The Home Office hinted at the possibility of extending pub licensing hours for various other events to encourage communal celebrations. This could entail pubs opening later for occasions like Eurovision, Royal Weddings, and the upcoming FIFA World Cup in the summer.

Emma McClarkin, CEO of the British Beer and Pub Association, praised the government’s decision to cut red tape, enabling pubs to open longer and foster community spirit during a summer filled with sports events. Kate Nicholls, chair of UKHospitality, welcomed the extended licensing hours for all knockout games of the World Cup, highlighting the positive impact on fans and hospitality establishments.

Michael Kill, CEO of the Night-Time Industries Association, commended the move as a significant boost for the hospitality sector and night-time economy, emphasizing the revenue generation, job support, and community cohesion it will foster during key match nights. This practical step aims to drive growth, enhance the matchday atmosphere, and unite communities through shared sporting experiences.
