“Heineken invests £44M in UK pubs, creating 850 jobs”

Heineken has announced a £44 million investment in its UK pubs, focusing on upgrading 647 establishments within its Star Pubs estate. This initiative includes a significant overhaul of 108 pubs with costs exceeding £145,000 each, resulting in the creation of around 850 jobs.

The refurbishment program aims to enhance various areas within the pubs for drinking, dining, and entertainment, with a special emphasis on sports-themed venues in preparation for the upcoming World Cup. Additionally, Heineken will experiment with a contemporary pub concept catered towards younger adults, offering a diverse experience from daytime coffee and workspaces to evening entertainment such as DJs, open-mic sessions, and live music.

Since 2018, Heineken has invested £328 million in British pubs, with ongoing work at 52 locations, including the reopening of boarded-up pubs. This investment initiative comes at a crucial time for the pub sector, facing challenges from escalating costs, reduced consumer spending, and increased National Insurance employer contributions. To alleviate some of the financial strain, pubs have received additional business rates support from the government.

Lawson Mountstevens, the managing director of Star Pubs, has called for governmental actions to alleviate tax burdens on pubs, emphasizing the importance of investment to sustain and enhance the pub experience. He highlighted the necessity for comprehensive reforms in business rates and reductions in taxation, including VAT and beer duty, to support the long-term viability of pubs. Mountstevens emphasized that the investment not only contributes to the pub industry but also creates flexible job opportunities, particularly benefitting young individuals entering the workforce.
