“Former Nato Chief Warns of UK Defense Risk”

Keir Starmer has dismissed strong criticism from a former Nato chief who accused the Government of displaying a concerning lack of awareness regarding defense matters. The Prime Minister is facing calls to release a much-delayed defense investment plan, with concerns raised about the UK’s military readiness in an increasingly unstable global environment. In a forceful statement, Lord Robertson, a former Labour defense secretary involved in last year’s Strategic Defense Review, cautioned that the nation’s security is at risk and criticized the Treasury’s actions as damaging.

Despite these remarks, Mr. Starmer reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring the safety of the British populace, emphasizing the seriousness with which he takes this responsibility. He made it clear that he does not share Lord Robertson’s viewpoints. The Prime Minister defended the Government’s record of increasing defense expenditure, citing the decision to elevate defense spending to 2.5% of GDP last year, funded by reductions in foreign aid allocations. Additionally, there are plans to boost core defense spending to 3.5% by 2035, aligning with a new Nato objective.

Reports have surfaced indicating that Rachel Reeves is considering a £10 billion increase in defense spending over four years, despite military leaders warning of a £28 billion shortfall due to years of underinvestment. The 10-year defense investment plan, originally scheduled for release in the autumn, remains pending as negotiations with the Treasury continue.

Lord Robertson voiced his critique publicly this week, attributing the lack of readiness for war to the escalating welfare budget and a lack of urgency from the Prime Minister. In response, Defense Secretary John Healey expressed disagreement with Lord Robertson’s assessment, affirming the Government’s proactive stance in delivering the strategic defense review and safeguarding the nation.

Healey emphasized the increasing threats faced by Britain and its NATO allies and stressed the Government’s commitment to enhancing defense investment significantly. While acknowledging the gravity of the warning issued, Labour MP Tan Dhesi echoed the concerns raised by the Defense Committee regarding the nation’s preparedness to confront current threats in a more volatile global landscape. He emphasized the need for the Government’s actions to align with reality and urged a swift progression towards achieving the 3% GDP spending target on defense within the current Parliament.

Labour MP Emma Lewell underscored the importance of reinforcing defense investment without compromising support for pensioners and individuals with disabilities who rely on welfare assistance.
