Brooke Henderson is in contention at the CPKC Women’s Open in Edmonton, with room to improve in the upcoming rounds. The defending champion from Smiths Falls, Ontario, aiming for her third victory in Canada’s LPGA event, carded a 68 in the second round on Friday, placing her at 5-under par.
As the tournament progresses, Henderson finds herself trailing the current leader, Soo Bin Joo of South Korea, by four strokes. Joo holds the lead at 9 under at the Royal Mayfair Golf Club in Edmonton.
Henderson was at 7 under before encountering some challenges on the back nine, resulting in a couple of bogeys. During one of her tee shots, she inadvertently hit a spectator with the ball, for which she promptly apologized and offered a golf ball as a gesture.
Aphrodite Deng from Calgary, last year’s low amateur in Mississauga, finished her round strongly with consecutive birdies, carding a 67 to reach 3 under par.
In the tournament, the top 65 players and those tied for the position will proceed to the next stage of the $2.75 million US event. Canadian teenagers Anna Huang from Vancouver and Michelle Xing from Richmond Hill, Ontario, started the day just three shots behind the leader at 5 under and had afternoon tee times.
The competition remains intense as the players strive for success in the CPKC Women’s Open.
