Virgin Media O2 users are being warned about a concerning new scam circulating on the platform. The telecoms company has raised an alert following a significant increase in fake call centre numbers being distributed through AI technology. Millions of individuals may have already fallen victim to this scheme, unknowingly contacting cybercriminals who aim to steal sensitive information, such as financial details.
Reports indicate that approximately 13% of UK consumers have encountered fraudulent customer service numbers via search engines or AI tools. Virgin Media highlighted that criminals are leveraging AI-powered tools to display fake contact information, websites, and search results, enabling them to collect data and carry out fraudulent activities.
With the reliance on AI-generated search results growing, hackers have found a prime opportunity to deceive unsuspecting users. To combat this threat, Virgin Media advises customers to only utilize authentic service numbers listed on official company websites, apps, or bills. For direct contact with O2, individuals should dial 202 from an O2 device, while Virgin Media customers can reach out by calling 150 from a landline.
It is crucial to exercise caution when encountering numbers suggested by search engines, social media posts, or AI tools. Additionally, individuals are urged never to disclose security codes or personal information to unsolicited callers, regardless of their claimed identity.
Murray Mackenzie, Director of Fraud Prevention at Virgin Media O2, emphasized the risks posed by AI tools in creating realistic fake numbers that can mislead individuals into contacting criminals instead of legitimate service providers. The company is actively safeguarding customers by blocking known scammer numbers on the network and utilizing AI to flag over 1 billion suspicious calls to date. Virgin Media O2 encourages the public to report suspicious numbers to 7726 to expedite the shutdown of scams.
By remaining vigilant and reporting potential scams promptly, everyone can contribute to the collective effort in safeguarding individuals from falling victim to fraudulent activities.
