A vehicle fire on the M1 motorway has led to disruptions this morning, resulting in the closure of three lanes between junction 33 for Sheffield and junction 34 for Meadowhall. The incident occurred just after 8 am, causing significant delays in the area.
According to the South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, the fire involving a HGV was reported at 7:58 am on the northbound stretch of the M1 between J33 and J34. Fire crews from Parkway, Aston, and Rotherham stations responded to the incident, with no reported casualties. The fire was believed to have started accidentally, and the crews left the scene by 9:27 am.
While three out of four lanes have now reopened, National Highways has advised drivers to anticipate delays. Recovery operations are ongoing following the vehicle fire, which temporarily closed three lanes for fire suppression efforts.
Current traffic updates indicate that one lane remains closed on the M1 northbound between J33 and J34. Delays of approximately 20 minutes are expected, with estimates suggesting that congestion may persist until around 1 pm.
Images from traffic cameras near the affected area depict long queues of vehicles due to the earlier lane closures. Motorists are urged to allow extra time for their journeys as recovery services continue to manage the aftermath of the incident.
