“US Synagogue Attacker Shot Dead After Crash”

A 41-year-old man, identified as Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, drove his vehicle into a US synagogue in a deliberate act of violence, according to authorities. The incident occurred at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield Township near Detroit, Michigan, where Ghazali was shot dead by security officers after crashing his vehicle into a hallway that later caught fire on March 12.

Fortunately, none of the synagogue’s staff, teachers, or the 140 children at its early childhood center were harmed during the attack. Ghazali, who arrived in the US in 2011 and became a citizen in 2016, was described by the FBI as targeting the Jewish community.

The FBI is leading the investigation into the assault at one of the country’s largest Reform synagogues, aiming to determine the motive behind Ghazali’s actions. Smoke engulfed the synagogue post-attack, leaving parents in shock and concerned for their children’s safety.

While a security officer was struck by the vehicle and briefly knocked unconscious, sustaining non-life-threatening injuries, around 30 law enforcement officers were treated for smoke inhalation. Temple security personnel swiftly responded to the threat, neutralizing Ghazali inside his vehicle.

Cassi Cohen, a witness at Temple Israel, recounted the chaotic scene and praised the preparedness of the staff during the crisis. Rabbi Arianna Gordon expressed gratitude towards the security team, law enforcement, and teachers for ensuring the children’s safety and reuniting them with their families.

Parents rushed to collect their children once the building was cleared, with some families reuniting at a nearby Jewish Community Center. Allison Jacobs, a parent with a child at the synagogue’s daycare, shared her shock and relief upon learning that her child was unharmed.

Jacobs reflected on the unpredictability of such events, emphasizing the need for awareness and preparedness in the face of tragedy.
