“UK to Upgrade 1M+ Homes with Free Internet Boost”

More than a million households in the UK are set to receive a complimentary internet upgrade from the government, as indicated by a newly unveiled interactive map showcasing the eligible areas.

The government’s Project Gigabit initiative aims to assist communities with limited access to high-speed gigabit-capable broadband services, focusing on properties and businesses in regions not covered by existing internet providers.

With a goal of achieving 99% gigabit-capable internet coverage by 2032, the government has accelerated the implementation of Project Gigabit, with over 750 premises being connected daily under the current phase of the nationwide initiative. The map highlights the specific towns and regions where these enhancements are being deployed.

The comprehensive Project Gigabit scheme will have a widespread impact across the UK, with particular attention being given to areas in England and Wales that are part of the extensive upgrade program. Openreach, in collaboration with the government through a substantial agreement valued at up to £1.2 billion, is leading efforts to bring full-fiber connectivity to over 297,000 rural homes and businesses. Furthermore, multiple contracts with other firms have been finalized to support Project Gigabit.

As an integral component of the broader initiative, the Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme offers eligible households vouchers worth up to £4,500 to aid in the installation of gigabit-capable broadband services. The scheme is presently focused on new projects not covered by existing commercial agreements or Project Gigabit contracts.

Telecoms minister Liz Lloyd emphasized the significance of these upgrades, stating that numerous rural areas have long grappled with inadequate internet speeds, hindering online activities. The ongoing government-funded upgrades are making a tangible difference by ensuring that more households and businesses have access to improved internet connectivity.
