“UK Petrol Prices Soar Amid US-Iran Conflict”

Petrol prices in the UK have surged by more than 10p per liter since the onset of the US-Iran conflict, as per the latest data released today. The continuous rise in fuel costs shows no signs of slowing down.

Government-published retailer data indicates that the average price for a liter of unleaded petrol has crossed the 140p mark today. However, the impact on fuel expenses varies across different regions in the UK. In locations like Cherwell and Great Yarmouth, motorists are facing an additional cost of over 12p per liter of unleaded petrol compared to prices before the conflict between the US and Iran began.

Our interactive map showcases the most recent average prices for a liter of unleaded petrol in each UK area reported by retailers on Thursday. It also highlights the price increase since the conflict commenced on February 28.

Among the 20 local authority areas where prices have surged the most following the conflict’s start, North Warwickshire stands out with prices close to 145p per liter for E10 unleaded. Over 130 local authority districts now have an average price exceeding 140p.

The ongoing US-Iran conflict is predicted to burden UK motorists with an additional £15 million per day in fuel expenses, with prices steadily climbing at petrol stations nationwide. The total daily cost of fuel in the UK has already escalated by £12.9 million since the conflict began, and this figure is expected to surpass £15 million based on current trends.

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has intensified monitoring of petrol and diesel prices in response to the Middle East turmoil, cautioning fuel retailers to ensure price increases reflect genuine cost pressures. Major retailers like Asda Express are now charging an average of 142.9p per liter for unleaded petrol, with other brands such as Esso, BP, Shell, Murco, and Texaco also exceeding 140p per liter.

Among the prominent supermarkets, Tesco currently leads with a price of 138.2p per liter, slightly higher than Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, and Asda. The Petrol Retailers Association (PRA) recently declined a meeting with government officials, citing concerns over inflammatory language potentially inciting abuse toward forecourt workers.

As the uncertainty in the Middle East persists, the Competition and Markets Authority has reiterated its intention to closely monitor fuel prices and ensure transparency in cost adjustments by retailers.
