Britain’s pubs and restaurants are vital community hubs. The hospitality industry has faced challenges due to increasing energy costs from volatile fossil fuel markets. To secure energy stability, the government is ramping up clean energy projects, aiming to reduce businesses’ reliance on fossil fuels and lower energy bills.
As part of these efforts, a new energy-saving scheme is being introduced to assist struggling hospitality businesses. More than 525 pubs, restaurants, and hotels will benefit from a digital tool providing customized plans to cut energy consumption and emissions. The scheme has already proven successful, with businesses reducing energy use by up to 66%, saving significant amounts on bills.
For instance, a pub in Caterham saved £1,500 annually by cutting energy use by 66%, while a Bromley pub now saves £48 weekly, totaling almost £2,500 yearly. This initiative not only reduces costs but also helps lower carbon emissions, showing that achieving net zero can benefit businesses and the environment.
By empowering owners to manage energy usage effectively, the scheme allows them to focus on customer service and business growth without the burden of high energy bills. Supporting small businesses not only benefits them but also strengthens local communities by boosting employment opportunities and providing spaces for social gatherings.
The government’s commitment to protecting the hospitality sector includes various measures like a 15% business rates cut for pubs and a £10 million fund to support thousands of businesses. This clean energy mission is geared towards safeguarding businesses, families, and communities nationwide.
