The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued a warning about the seriousness of Legionnaires’ disease for certain individuals in the country, emphasizing that three specific groups are at higher risk. The agency shared information on social media to raise awareness of this severe lung infection, which is a type of pneumonia.
According to the NHS, Legionnaires’ disease is contracted by inhaling water droplets containing Legionella bacteria. Although uncommon, this disease can have severe consequences, especially for older adults, smokers, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions. UKHSA highlighted in a public statement that Legionnaires’ disease is caused by Legionella pneumophila bacteria and explained the elevated risk faced by particular groups.
Recent reports from UKHSA have shown an increase in Legionnaires’ disease cases in parts of north-west and south-west London, prompting an urgent investigation. Dr. Janice Lo, a health protection consultant for London at UKHSA, mentioned that while the exact source is still unknown, collaborative efforts are ongoing to gather more information.
The bacteria responsible for Legionnaires’ disease are present in various environments and can flourish in large water systems within buildings. Proper maintenance, regular testing, and treatment of water systems are crucial to prevent bacterial growth and mitigate health risks, as emphasized by UKHSA.
Legionnaires’ disease is typically contracted in settings like offices, hospitals, or hotels when Legionella bacteria contaminate water supplies. Sources of infection can include air conditioning systems, spa pools, infrequently used taps or showers, and humidifiers. Drinking water, contact with infected individuals, or natural water sources like rivers and ponds are generally not sources of Legionnaires’ disease transmission.
Symptoms of Legionnaires’ disease should not be ignored, and seeking medical attention promptly is advised. Most cases are treated in hospitals, with patients typically recovering fully. If symptoms such as respiratory issues or high fever arise, individuals are encouraged to contact a healthcare provider immediately and provide details of recent locations visited, especially if in healthcare or hospitality settings.
UKHSA’s primary role is to safeguard public health in England, underscoring the importance of proactive measures to address health threats like Legionnaires’ disease.
