Latest weather forecasts indicate that temperatures are expected to plummet to -11C with snowfall sweeping across the United Kingdom. Based on the GFS weather model, a significant number of British residents may witness snowfall before the end of March, affecting major cities including London, Birmingham, and Manchester.
Initial projections show snowfall starting in Scotland and progressing southward by March 28. By 6pm, heavy snow is anticipated in large parts of northern England, while the Midlands and Wales are likely to experience rain. The snowfall is anticipated to continue moving southward, reaching the southern coast by 3am on March 29, with Bristol and London also expected to see snowfall.
Forecasts suggest that snowfall may persist in London for several hours, with subsequent snowfall expected in the southeast, central-southern England, Yorkshire, the northeast, and Scotland by 3pm on March 29.
Snow coverage maps indicate that approximately 70% of the UK could be blanketed in snow by March 29. Only Northern Ireland, Wales, and western regions of England and Scotland are forecasted to remain snow-free.
Significant temperature drops are also anticipated during this period. Projections suggest temperatures could plummet to -11C in Scotland, -3C in Northern Ireland, -4C in northern England, and -2C in Wales, with London expected to struggle to reach temperatures above 2C.
The Met Office has highlighted an “increased” likelihood of cold weather towards the end of March and into April. The agency’s forecast from March 28 to April 11 suggests the potential for prolonged periods of specific weather types, influenced by high-pressure systems predominantly positioned to the north or northeast of the UK.
