UK Braces for Snow as Cold Spell Approaches

The Met Office has identified multiple regions in the UK that are expected to see snowfall before Thursday. Despite the relatively mild weather in March so far, a cold spell is forecasted to return next week, leading to potential snow showers in specific areas by the following Thursday.

According to the latest forecast map for Wednesday, March 25, snow is predicted to fall in various locations, mainly in northern Scotland. However, wintry showers could also affect the northern regions, with parts of Northern Ireland likely to experience snow as well.

The Met Office has warned of “much more unstable” conditions arriving from Wednesday, including snow on higher ground, coastal winds, and below-average temperatures. The areas expected to receive snow, as per the Met Office’s snow maps, encompass northern Scotland, central Scotland, and Northern Ireland.

In the upcoming week, a shift to a cooler and more unsettled weather pattern is anticipated, with frequent showers expected, some potentially heavy and wintry over elevated terrain. Lower levels in the north might also see snow later in the day, with temperatures hovering near or slightly below average.

Met Office Chief Forecaster, Steve Willington, explained that while the current week has seen warmer weather in Britain, colder spells and wintry showers in March are not uncommon. As the week progresses, a transition to a cooler northwesterly flow will bring colder temperatures, unsettled weather, hill snow in the north, and occasional brisk winds.

Temperature variations are typical for this time of year, with warm conditions alternating with colder snaps as the clocks change, which is scheduled for next weekend. Following a warm weekend where temperatures could surpass 16°C, a drop in temperatures is expected. The Northwest of England is expected to enjoy the best weather on Saturday.
