Former President Donald Trump appeared to suggest that the United States could potentially leave its allies to manage the critical oil route, the Strait of Hormuz, after the conclusion of the conflict with Iran. Trump had previously called on the UK and other countries to assist in safeguarding the key waterway through which 20% of the world’s oil passes.
In a social media post, Trump criticized US allies for their lack of responsiveness and proposed the idea of countries that benefit from the strait taking responsibility for its security. Trump, who initially misspelled the waterway as the ‘Hormuz straits,’ later corrected the error but continued to refer to it in a dismissive manner during a press conference.
Despite his calls for assistance, Trump asserted that the US did not require help from allies to navigate the Strait of Hormuz, as most of his pleas for support were turned down. In a conversation with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, they discussed the significance of reopening the strait to alleviate disruptions in global shipping and reduce costs worldwide.
