“Travel Experts Warn: Avoid Salty Snacks Before Flights”

Passengers planning air travel during the upcoming Easter holidays and beyond are being urged to avoid a common airport snack before boarding. Not all flights offer food options, particularly shorter ones, so it’s important to grab a snack beforehand.

Travel experts at Ski Vertigo caution that consuming certain salty snacks before a flight can exacerbate discomfort during long journeys. Snacks like pretzels, crisps, or salted nuts, often purchased at airport gates, can lead to passengers feeling bloated, thirsty, and uneasy once inside the dry aircraft cabin, worsening dehydration.

The low humidity levels at cruising altitudes can contribute to passengers feeling dehydrated, making water the preferred choice in-flight. However, salty snacks can aggravate the situation as they can cause the body to retain fluid due to high sodium content, leading to swelling, especially in the feet and ankles on extended flights.

While feeling tightness in shoes after prolonged sitting is common during flights, the food choices can impact the discomfort level. NHS guidelines suggest reducing salt intake to manage fluid retention related to swelling.

Alex Dyer, Head of customer success at Ski Vertigo, emphasized that opting for a salty snack out of convenience may lead to increased thirst and discomfort during flights. Avoiding such snacks can help prevent these issues for passengers already prone to swollen ankles or feeling unwell while flying.

It’s common for airports to promote last-minute snack purchases near the checkouts, with salty snacks being a popular choice. Consuming these snacks just before boarding can have a more pronounced effect when confined to a seat, especially when movement is restricted, such as when the seatbelt sign is on.

Experts recommend prioritizing water intake before and during the flight, and limiting caffeine and alcohol consumption to combat dehydration and make the travel experience more comfortable.

For passengers seeking snacks, experts suggest opting for less salty options like bananas or cereal bars. Checking the nutritional labels is advised, as many snack-sized products still contain high levels of salt.

The focus is not to eliminate treats entirely but to avoid snacks that contribute to discomfort during the flight. Choosing a sealed drink and skipping the salty snack before take-off can lead to a more pleasant flight experience overall.
