A mother has shared a cautionary tale after her young child faced a life-threatening stroke triggered by a severe illness. Two-year-old Hudson Reid initially exhibited symptoms of a common sickness bug, including vomiting and difficulty keeping fluids down. However, his condition took a drastic turn when his arm became immobilized, his legs extended unnaturally, and he started making unusual sounds.
Rushing him to the hospital, Hudson’s mother, Amber Davidson, witnessed a team of doctors urgently working to resuscitate her son who had lost consciousness en route. Despite initial test results showing no concerns, further scans revealed a significant blood clot and bleeding in Hudson’s brain, leading to the stroke episode.
Swiftly transferred to Glasgow Children’s ICU, specialists identified that the clot stemmed from an extremely rare case of dehydration resulting from the illness, causing his blood to thicken abnormally. Following a month-long hospital stay, which involved blood transfusions and blood-thinning treatments, Hudson defied expectations by regaining mobility within a week, despite medical predictions of permanent disability.
Now seven years old, Hudson faces ongoing challenges with movement and speech due to the impact of the stroke on his brain. Nonetheless, he attends school and continues to display remarkable resilience, impressing his caregivers with his progress. Amber, a self-employed beauty therapist from Kilwinning, Ayrshire, expressed gratitude for her son’s recovery, emphasizing his miraculous survival and determination.
Hudson’s journey highlights the critical nature of timely stroke treatment, as prompt intervention can mitigate long-term complications. Strokes, caused by disruptions in brain blood supply, necessitate immediate medical attention to prevent severe consequences. Common risk factors include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, atrial fibrillation, and diabetes, which can be managed through a healthy lifestyle.
While Hudson continues to receive therapy and medical monitoring, his mother advocates for increased awareness of childhood stroke risks, underscoring the importance of recognizing symptoms and seeking prompt medical care. Despite initial disbelief surrounding Hudson’s ordeal, Amber remains grateful for his progress and resilience, emphasizing the need for vigilance and awareness in similar situations.
